Veggie Tales
Posted in Birthday, Birthday Cakes with tags fondant veggie tales, veggie tales cake on January 20, 2010 by A Sweet DesignCarla started buying cakes from us while Bella was still in her tummy. Her first cake was an awesome baby shower cake about 3 years ago. This past weekend we made an awesome Veggie tales cake to celebrate her 2nd Birthday. It’s amazing how time flies. Now that I have a daughter of my own, I can’t wait until her birthday every October to make an awesome celebration cake.
I didn’t know who these characters were until my cake consultation with Carla and her adorable sister several weeks ago.
Neil Gruen Photography
Posted in Uncategorized on December 3, 2009 by A Sweet DesignI just had the pleasure of visiting the lovely home studio of Neil Gruen. Besides being a great guy he is also a great photographer. What’s truly awesome is that he utilizes his home studio for park-like engagement photos as well as having an indoor studio for weddings, boudior, family and children. These are pictures that are possible all within the same location…how perfect is that.

For those living with Celiac Disease…
Posted in Off the Press with tags Celiac Disease, gluten free cakes, wheat free cakes on November 30, 2009 by A Sweet Design…you can now enjoy the taste of the cake instead of just the look of the cake.
A Sweet Design is baking up wheat free/gluten free cakes of all kinds these days along with our regular cakes and they are just as tasty. No more siting on the sidelines and watching everyone else enjoy cake. A little more pricey than regular cake but well worth it when you aren’t suffering with the consequences of eating wheat or gluten.
What is Celiac Disease you might ask….well, Celiac Disease is triggered by consumption of the protein called gluten, which is found in wheat, barley and rye. When people with celiac disease eat foods containing gluten, their immune system responds by damaging the finger-like villi of the small intestine. When the villi become damaged, the body is unable to absorb nutrients into the bloodstream, which can lead to malnourishment.

Romance at Calamigos Ranch Malibu
Posted in Wedding Cakes with tags A Sweet Design, Black and white wedding cakes, Calamigos Ranch Malibu, Forever True Photography on November 29, 2009 by A Sweet DesignWhen I first meet Dafne and Alex I knew they were going to be a fun couple to work with. They both knew their wedding had to be memorable, romantic and fun. A very special touch for the groom was the spade logo on the wedding cake (This is the logo for a club that Alex is a member of). They chose to have several flavors for the cake to include a tier of toasted coconut, another of mango mousse and finally coffee cream with espresso chips. This stunning wedding cake was iced in vanilla whipped buttercream.
The location was just perfect for their romantic fall wedding. Both ceremony and reception were held at the amazing Calamigos Ranch Malibu (personally one of my favorite locations). To capture the wedding was no other than Michael and Maggie from Forever True Photography. From the small details to the moments that matter, Michael and Maggie can always capture the true beauty of a couple. Just looking at the picture of Alex holding the bouquet and Dafne looking back laughing reminds me of what a fun couple they are.
Congratulations you guys on Happily Ever After…thank you for letting A Sweet Design be a part of your wedding celebration!
Carnival Baby Shower
Posted in Uncategorized with tags A Stunning Affair, Adobe Pico Park, Forever True Photography, Noah's Ark baby shower cake on October 6, 2009 by A Sweet DesignOn September 13, in Mission Hills at Adobe Pico Park, My husband and I celebrated the upcoming arrival of our baby at our Carnival Baby Shower.
Event Coordinator and Designer, Lina Wallace of A Stunning Affair took our theme to the next level. Her and her team executed what was a flawless and very detailed event. We were actually able to enjoy ourselves and our guests since we weren’t runnng around trying to get everything done. Hiring Lina from the begining was the best choice we made. Both of us work full time and with the baby to plan for, we just didn’t want the added stress of planning a party for 85 guests.
To capture the event was Michael of Forever True Photography. Michael always impressess with his attention to detail shots. Working with Michael is so refreshing…he knows how important the detail shots are which is why referring him to clients is so easy.
Yummy treats at the dessert station were a huge hit. Ofcourse I had to make sure there were donuts..my favorite bad food of all time. Lina set up a fabulous station using different sized jars and stands. All were labeled and wrapped in ribbon (Lina did that ofcourse). We purchased cute boxes from the Oriental Trading Company for guests to take snacks home in…I didn’t even get one piece!!!
Miguel surprised me with an amazing Noahs Ark Baby Shower cake with handmade animals…two by two ofcourse. Inside was delicious vanilla cake, raspberry jam and chocolate buttercream….my favorite.
Now it’s just a matter of days before our little bundle of joy is out with us. The sooner baby is here…the sooner baby can get to work on helping at the bakery..just kidding.
The Knot Magazine at Dodger Stadium
Posted in Just Chatting, Off the Press with tags A Stunning Affair, A Sweet Design, Dodger Staduim, The Knot Magazine on October 5, 2009 by A Sweet DesignNothing makes you feel more like a star than seeing your company logo on the Jumbo Screen at Dodger Stadium. Thanks to Mary Sushinski of Occasions, Lina Wallace of A Stunning Affair and Monique Matlock of The Knot, A Sweet Design provided pastries to over 300 guests. Capturing the event was no other than Red Loft Studios. I can’t wait until they post pictures.
Brittni and I had a great time eating the yummy crab legs provided by The Dodger Stadium Catering Company. Then it was off to Shutter Booth for some great snap shots. To cap the evening off…and rest my sore feet, I had a steaming hot latte from The Cappuccino Connection (who had an amazing display of all their fancy machines) along with a just-from-the-fryer-donut from The Fry Girl Inc. I was secretly craving those donuts since I found out they would be there.
I had a great time and am really glad to have participated in the event with The Knot. Thank you!!!!
Celebrating at The Jump Around
Posted in Birthday, Birthday Cakes with tags Birthday Cakes, rainbow birthday cakes, the jump around, virginia mackel photograpy on August 11, 2009 by A Sweet DesignAva celebrated her birthday in style at the most popular indoor playground: The Jump Around. Ofcourse only the best cake in town would do…layers of vanilla and chocolate cake with creamy bavarian chocolate chip as the filling. I always appreciate receiving pictures from parents, especially when they are professionals. I can’t wait for my maternity shots in a couple weeks with Virginia.
“I just wanted to tell you how much we loved the cake. You did a beautiful job! Everyone was asking who made it of course because it tasted so wonderful. I am happy there was a tiny bit left for me to enjoy after all the party chaos.” ~ Virginia
Grooms Cakes
Posted in Fondant, Grooms Cakes with tags Grooms Cakes on August 11, 2009 by A Sweet DesignThe beloved groom deserves a cake that’s all his own. Something that brings out his personality or reflects a hobby.
Alex…our shoe lover (75 in his collection) requested this awesome cake. Two shoe boxes stacked on top of each other and a replica of the shoe his bride was to wear and a replica of his favorite pair of Nike. The shoes are hand sculpted from gumpaste and hand painted. The fondant covered cake had delicious red velvet cake with cream cheese filling.
Michael and Allison, who wed at the lovely Westlake Village Inn, enjoyed this grooms cake during the rehersal dinner. Allison completely surprised her husband to be by ordering this cake for him. Michael is a huge fan of the movie Finding Nemo. We created wedding bands and placed them in the edible clam shell on top of the cake. Nemo and Dori make a cute pair at the base of the cake. This really was…A Sweet Catch!!
Natalie ordered this special grooms cake for her brother…what better way to say you think he’s the Man of Steel!!!!
How about the Captain of a Pirate Ship
